Best Liquid Concealer for Oily, Acne-Prone, Dry & Sensitive Skin
When choosing a concealer, we tend to focus on choosing the right color without considering the skin type or the ingredients or formulae in the concealer.
However, wearing the wrong concealer might make your skin's problems worse or even chapped, so it's important to think about your skin type, ingredients, and concealer formulations.
I have medium to dry skin so, to find a concealer that suits each skin type, I asked 3 friends with acne-prone, oily, and sensitive skin to test them and they kindly tested them and introduced me to good products. So, while I am confident in my recommendations, please keep in mind that everyone's skin is different and everyone's skin issues are different, so consider that as well.
Before looking at product recommendations, let’s take a look at the ingredients and formulations of concealer that you should look for.
For Oily Skin
You don't want products with an oily finish or that make your skin seem glossy. If you have oily skin, look for products that have a silky and smooth finish. Those kinds of ingredients are mostly silicone-based ingredients, and you might think that silicone clogs pores, but actually, it's not. Silicone plays a role in forming the most breathable membrane on the skin. No need to worry about silicone as it is shown to be much safer than vegetable oils, especially for acne-prone or oily skin.
Regarding the formulae, it is better to avoid products that are too creamy or come in a stick type because it contains ingredients that have a high probability of clogging pores, such as coconut oil. Not only do these ingredients make your skin shiny, but they also increase the chances of your skin turning over. So, look for a product that is in liquid form.
Now let's look at the recommended products for oily skin. We will talk about products step by step from high coverage to low coverage.
Products with the highest coverage:
1. Loreal's Infallible Full Wear Concealer:
This product is loved by both my oily-skinned friend and me, who has dry skin. Although the formula itself has a thick and creamy consistency, it is lightweight when applied with high coverage which seems to be the result of the main ingredients being water, undecane, glycerin, and dimethicone.
Because of the high quantity of dimethicone, it has a matte finish. It's matte, yet it doesn't dry out my skin. I use a tiny quantity of this concealer to hide the pores on my nose now and then. This is impossible to do with a moist concealer.
The last thing you need to know is that it contains an ingredient called Benzyl Salicylate. For people with sensitive skin, this ingredient is related to skin allergies. Overall, it is a good product that is long-lasting and is good for oily and dry skin.
2. Tarte's Shape Tape Concealer:
This tart concealer is more moisturizing and has a superior texture. It takes longer to blend by hand which means you can blend the product longer and feel softer. It has hydrating, nourishing, and moisturizing ingredients which are mango seed butter and shea butter. It is a product that makes your makeup look thick as it is a lightweight and breathable formula. Fragrances, on the other hand, make up a significant portion of the ingredients, so you may wish to avoid them.
Products with medium coverage:
NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer:
This concealer has the lightest weight of all the medium-coverage concealers I've tried. It is a product that can continuously increase the coverage and fix quickly, so you need to blend it immediately after application. It contains grape seed extract and magnolia bark extract, which are the ingredients that provide moisture and do not clog pores. It also contains less than 1% synthetic fragrance.
Among the many things my friend has tried, this is one of her favorites. Personally, my skin is dry, especially around my eyes. When I use this product, I think I will apply it mainly to areas where I do not feel dry, such as very small areas.
Products with light-medium coverage:
Maybelline Fit Me Concealer:
This concealer seems to be the most cost-effective and does its job well. If you ask someone which concealer is the most pleasant to apply, they will tell you this one. In comparison to the aforementioned products, the natural coverage provides a less matte look. The light and slightly creamy texture make blending well. It contains no fragrance and contains Matricaria flower extract which is suitable for sensitive skin and acts as a soothing agent for the skin.
For Acne Prone Skin
I think the products used for acne-prone skin can be divided into two product groups in terms of formulae. First, it is better to use a product with a matte finish to apply to the acne area. If your concealer has light-reflecting particles, it will make the acne you cover stand out. Clean hands or a brush are required to conceal active acne.
The second important thing is that your skin is moisturized enough with a moisturizer that contains emollient ingredients.
1. Clinique's Beyond Perfecting Foundation Concealer:
This concealer contains a lot of moisturizing ingredients, so it gives your skin a solid appearance, and it also has a brightening effect because it contains micro-pearls.
Instead of acne spots, large portions of the face should be painted.
It does not contain fragrance, so it is a product worth trying for those with sensitive or dry skin. If you have acne-prone skin and want moisture, but want an oil-free product, this is best for it.
2. Smashbox flawless skin 24hrs concealer:
This concealer is for you if you have acne-prone skin and need moisture but don't want anything oily. This concealer has a moisturizing formula with high coverage. Although, it leaves your skin a little bit sticky and gives you a semi-matte finish. It has a moisturizing formula that does not make your skin dry or irritated.
3. Bare Minerals Complete Coverage Serum Concealer:
This concealer is moisturizing and provides light and medium coverage. It is a great product to apply under the eyes and blends well with the skin. This product is paraben, alcohol, and silicone-free, so if you want to avoid these ingredients, you will want to choose it.
4. Almay's Clear Complexion Concealer:
This concealer is a very interesting product, but it contains 1% salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is one of the ingredients that help to improve acne and has a mild anti-inflammatory effect.
My second friend, who tested this product, used products containing salicylic acid for both skin care and makeup. When I questioned, if she thought I should use a salicylic acid-based makeup product, she said she hadn't noticed any difference. So don't expect this product to magically make your acne disappear. Despite its fairly high content of 1% salicylic acid, it moisturizes and does not dry out the skin.
However, I recommend that you apply this product to the acne area rather than the entire face because non-acne areas can be dry.
For sensitive skin
If you have sensitive skin, you may be looking for a less irritating product. The biggest cause of skin allergy in sensitive skin is fragrance. However, this does not mean that all sensitive skin types react the same when using fragrances. It all depends on your skin condition and skin concerns. To reduce sensitivity and risk, choose cosmetics with a limited number of ingredients.
While investigating each skin type and concealer ingredients, I noticed something, the criteria for choosing a concealer for acne-prone and sensitive skin are very similar except for the ingredients that improve acne, it's very much the same. Those with sensitive skin may benefit from the acne concealers I have mentioned.
Ilya's True Skin Serum Concealer:
The first thing you'll notice when looking at the ingredient list is aloe vera extract, which helps to soothe and moisturize your skin, which is good for people with sensitive skin. This concealer has a lightweight composition with a somewhat creamy feel. It can also make your skin look softer and plumper. It's a moisturizing cream with a lot of ingredients.
For dry skin
To choose a concealer that suits dry skin, the first thing to do is to find a product that contains a lot of emollient. Vegetable oil extracts, mineral oil, shea butter, and cocoa butter are examples of emollients.
Second, it is important to find a product with a lot of humectants. For example, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, and squalene. These ingredients give the skin a firmer and brighter look. Improves dry and flaky skin texture It works like a gem for dry skin.
Product with High Coverage
Tart's Creaseless Concealer:
This concealer clings to the skin and does not easily transfer or spread. When blending, it is a product that requires more hand blending. This concealer is the most hydrating of all the high-coverage concealers I've tried.
When I do my makeup, I always put a corrector on the underside and then a concealer. Because it is a much more effective way to cover dark circles than using a lot of concealers. When I started testing this product, I was astounded to discover that all I needed was a concealer to get rid of my dark circles. It has that much coverage and doesn't dry out the skin.
It was a fantastic product with a straightforward ingredient list. It does not contain parabens and mineral oil, so it can be a good option if you are worried about those ingredients.
Product medium-full coverage
Rare Beauty's Liquid Touch Brightening Concealer:
It has a somewhat waterier texture than the tart version for the same price. So, it is easier to blend and spread a little more. Glycerin seems to occupy a fairly high percentage in the ingredient list, so it also gives moisture to the skin. Good for those with dry skin as it gives a slightly shiny finish. The ingredients are also made up of fairly mild-looking ones and contain less than 1% synthetic fragrance. It may also be a suitable product for people with sensitive skin.
Products with light-medium coverage
1. KOSAS Revealer Concealer:
Because it includes so many oily and hydrating components, this concealer is ideal for dry skin. It has the effect of decreasing puffiness since it includes caffeine. It also includes hyaluronic acid and peptides, which have the effect of expanding the skin, it is a concealer for flawless dryness. It also contains squalene, my favorite ingredient.
So, I recommend this product if you have dry skin or want a moist concealer. If you have really sensitive skin or are allergic to fragrances, it is best to avoid them. Because it contains rosemary extract, which has fragrance ingredients. If you like clean beauty or if you like products with organic and natural ingredients, you will love this product.
2. RMS Beauty Un Cover-Up Concealer:
If you look at the ingredient list, it's really simple and most of it consists of oils extracted from plants. It is a product made up of plant extracts with the concept of nature. So, it gives the skin a feeling of nourishment. It comes in a pod so it is easy to use with your fingers. It has a soft-applying formula, so it spreads smoothly on the skin as well. It is also a product that does not contain alcohol or fragrance.
