Tips and Tricks for a Cake-Free Summer Glow!
Now that the weather is humid and hot, our skin is heating up, our oil is pumping up and our sweat glands are activated to the max. I know we all want that fresh long-lasting and healthy-looking base makeup so I'm going to be sharing some helpful tips and tricks that no one else tells you.
For a summer proof, humidity-proof, sweat-proof makeup it's so easy for us to fall into the trap of overdoing matte we pack a mattifying primer, matte foundation, matte concealer, matte powder, and matte setting spray but this might be a big mistake that makes your skin and makeup even cakier and your skin oilier. It also obsessed the balance of our oil to water ratio on the skin making your skin more dehydrated so let's #pressreset on base and see what to do in spending.
Tip # 01: Create a Well Hydrated Canvas
I asked a couple of makeup artists and chemists to share their tips and tricks to create that flawless base makeup for summertime and they all came back with one common answer, hydration.
As we all know our skin feels the most comfortable when it's well hydrated and when it's the most supple and plump, more at ease to the point where it doesn't need to pump up more oil. To compensate for any dehydrations do not forget to hydrate and moisturize your skin so, I applied CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion to prep my skin, your sunscreen can be your primer.
I always love using sunscreen as a makeup primer and Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel Sunscreen Lotion is a good hydrating base but to some people, it might be a little bit greasy so definitely test it out also this does have oxybenzone so if you are avoiding that ingredient or sensitive to it you may not want to use this product.
A good alternative could be EltaMD UV clear SPF 46. I love the tinted formula and this uses zinc oxide and octene oxide. This is a hybrid sunscreen which can be a good middle ground chemical sunscreen whereas hybrid sunscreens are generally better and 100% mineral sunscreen when paired with foundation.
Tip # 02: Look for Products That Offer a Natural Finish
When shopping for products don't limit yourself to only mattifying or oil-controlling product formulas. Overly relying on mattifying products will make your skin more uncomfortable and overcome the same dryness with more oil anyway, so, look for something that offers a finish that's similar to what your natural skin finish would be. I recommend using L’Oréal infallible foundation.
Tip # 03: Know Your Tools
It is so important to know what gadgets do, we don't take the extra time to get to know our makeup tools so let's do that right now. For this, I recommend using the BeautyBlender Blender Makeup Sponge.
There are mainly two ways to use a Beauty Blender damp or dry. A damp Beauty Blender offers a streak-free airbrush natural finish with a little bit less coverage but still good enough. A dry Beauty Blender, on the other hand, packs more product onto your skin meaning that you're getting more coverage and generally a little bit of more matte finish. That being said for the ultimate natural finish and easy application method, I always use a damp Beauty Blender or simply spray a mist on top of my Beauty Blender to wet the surface.
When you're using a brush, density matters the denser the brush is the more coverage you would get. Dense brushes pick up more product and therefore, deposit and distribute more of the product onto your skin whereas a looser brush picks up less product. The length of the brush hair matters too, shorter hairs are stiffer transferring more product directly onto the skin whereas longer hairs are more flexible diffusing the product for a gentler application and natural finish. I recommend using the Real Techniques Brush for loose powder application.
Tip # 04: Less Is More When It Comes to Makeup Application
It's so easy for us to just think that our entire face is like a coloring book to fill in. Your facial muscles probably move thousands or a million times a day and the more you move your face the more your makeup moves around too. So, to prevent this from happening the key is to use as less product as possible, we want to believe as much skin-makeup-free as possible so we can interact with the world being given it as building a surface with dots and you're stopping it midway around 50%. Give your skin flexibility by spot correcting. Start from the center of your face to concentrate the product, where it's needed the most and then distribute whatever is remaining on the Beauty blender to the rest of your face, you'll notice how much less product you will need.
Tip # 05: Mist Sandwich
Another common makeup artist trick is, definitely to spray a hydrating facial mist in between makeup layers. Do not over-drench it, do not overdo it, but just spray a very gentle gorgeous amount and create a mist sandwich that glues the product together by hydrating them. I recommend using Missha First Treatment Mist.
Tip # 06: Loose Powder with Loose Brush Is Going to Be Better Than Pressed Powder with a Sponge
Use a loose powder with a loose brush with the gentlest pressure possible. Again, less is more, more powder equals more skin caking. Instead of using a pressed powder with a sponge, apply loose powder with the softest most flexible brush, this will naturally hold and set your makeup without taking away your natural hydration and glow and a little bit of your natural skin will shine through. I recommend using Maybelline Loose Finishing Powder.
Finally, I finish my base makeup using these two products, the NYX Ultimate Shadow Palette, and warm neutrals have definitely been my daily go-to eye shadow palette and then the final touch with this L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara. There you have tips and tricks for long-lasting summer makeup.
